Ruth and Nathaniel were introduced to Team Tassy in late 2011. Ruth, age 2, had been suffering from a life-threatening medical condition since birth. Our friends at Partners in Health (PIH), recommended a doctor working at the Zanmi Lasante (“Partners in Health” in Haitian Kreyol) clinic in LasCahobas, Haiti. After a quick procedure, Ruth was sent home with an antibiotic and quickly recovered to become a happy, healthy toddler.
When we met Nathaniel, now a rambunctious 6 year old, he was malnourished, lethargic, and suffering from two medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. To connect Nathaniel with the help he needed, the Team again reached out to our friends at PIH. Nathaniel underwent two successful operations at Zanmi Lasante, which greatly reduced his risk of developing cancer or other serious medical conditions later in life.
Marc Noel, the children’s father, had been unable to find work for a long time when Team Tassy met him. Struggling to make ends meet, he could not even afford to renew his driver’s license. The Team provided him with the means to do this and he is now working regularly as a driver for Team Tassy and other local organizations in Port au Prince. Since he now earns a stable income and no longer struggles to put food on the table, the health of his children have greatly improved. Team Tassy’s next goals are to place Marc Noel’s wife Carmita in a job where she can use her skills as a seamstress and to help hire local contractors to repair the family’s house, which has a leaky roof and other structural problems.
